Small Routines, Big Changes: The Power of Daily Habits

It's been 10 months since I officially started coaching. I mainly work on career and personal development. During this process, of course, I gained a lot of experience and witnessed good developments. Sometimes people ask about my coaching style, I get questions about what we do, when the person will need a coaching service. I cannot answer all of these questions in this article, but today I will touch on routines, which are the subject that forms the basis of my coaching perspective.

A little me…

I am someone who, without being very conscious, has built the foundation of my life on routines. I have been trying to be planned since I was little. I realized that this is partly related to my personality, that is, it is something I was born with. Although I tend to be planned, don't think that I manage to be organized very easily. After my 20s, I slowly started to implement the plans I had made into my life. Before, like many of you, I was a person who had difficulty in realising the plans she made. If you are wondering why I started to be successful, the answer to this question would be to never give up . After each failed plan, I got up again, and with each attempt, I got to know myself a little better. In fact, every loss and getting back on my feet strengthened my will. After a while, my willpower developed, I became more disciplined, and I started to know myself better. Making a plan is actually nothing more than making a daily habit, that is, creating a routine. After a while, I became unable to live without routine. The common point of all the periods when I fall psychologically is that they coincide with periods when I have no routine. Of course, it works almost the same way in reverse. Whenever things got out of my control, I immediately fell back into my routines and got back on my feet. I witnessed firsthand how the change outside affects the inside. When I look at it in general, I call myself a happy person, but now that I think about it, I realize that I found the formula for happiness in routines.

  1. Routines make dreams come true I accompany my clients to help them realise their dreams. Of course, first of all, you must have concrete dreams. Daily routines that will later lead us to dreams. The most basic, indispensable feature of routines is that they are tiny (baby steps). Tiny but realistic, tiny but goal-achieving, tiny but open to growth... After a while, you start to feel good. But after a while, events in the general flow of life disrupt your routines. Depending on how strong your muscles are at this point, either everything falls apart or you fall back into routine. Having a traveling companion makes things easier when you can't get back. In short, routines that start small have the ability to grow themselves and you.

  2. Routines reduce anxiety and stress Those who have routines feel in control of their lives. An increased sense of control helps reduce anxiety and stress levels, especially in times of uncertainty. Because someone who can take control of his life can deal with uncertainty much more easily. Also, those who have certain things to do on a daily basis are busy people. They do something for themselves and their dreams. This makes it easier to control emotional states. Sometimes when something bothers me (even though it's often things that aren't worth the bother), I realize that's not the time to be bothered.

  3. Better time management thanks to routines We all want to do dozens of things during the day . But everyone complains about lack of time. I have proven to myself many times that this is not true. There is no such thing as lack of time, at most there is time that is not managed well. Those who have solid routines have unlimited time. It is clear at what time, where and which routine he will do. Even establishing a morning and evening routine in its simplest form will lead to big changes in your life. Morning routines provide a structured way to make the most of the first hours of the day. Evening routines aim to prepare for the next day and ensure a comfortable sleep.

  4. Routines enable better focus It is much easier for someone who has certain things to do on a daily basis to focus. Especially as you continue the routine for a while, it becomes much easier to focus and take action. There is no need to ask questions such as "What will I do now?" during the day. Routines do not keep you busy with such unnecessary questions. You just focus on your list.

  5. Routines make you happy. Of course, when you consider the items above, the sum of all of these is more than enough to make us happy :) Dreams come true, no anxiety, stress, better time management, better focus... What else isn't enough to be happy? Of course, it is obvious that these have a direct impact on happiness. But there is another dimension to the job: being busy! Humans was not born to sit idle. Philosophy and holy books always touch on the same point: not to remain idle. As long as a person sits idle, he rots. Lives without production and development have difficulty being happy. A happy person is a person who lives a life within his own routines. There is no time to think about the many annoying details.

Even continuing your routine for a while will have positive effects on your life. By trying it for a short time, you can observe the positive changes in yourself. There will always be breaks in life. Knowing this, starting something will prevent disappointment to some extent. The important thing is to start again. When you start again, don't expect to pick up where you left off. Continue your journey with the same small steps you started with. You will find that progress is easier than when you first started.
